ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester non-profit foundation is giving people an avenue to develop skills for a life-long career.
Diamond Gardner is getting himself set up for a journey he never imagined just one year ago.
“Adjusting the camera and sound check and then we will be good to go,” said Gardner.
He’s about to record an episode of the locally produced “Anything Sports Show” with Nate Brown Jr., who hosts “What’s Going On? The Experience” on Fox Sports radio 1280AM in Rochester on Sunday mornings
Diamond has always been passionate about sports, but it wasn’t until he was connected with the Anthony Washington Foundation of Technology & Trade in Rochester that he would get behind the mic.
“I’ve been involved in sports my entire life, but as far as the production side of things and doing a show and things like that. They gave me an opportunity that I never thought I would have or even fathom thinking about,” said Diamond.
The AW Foundation is a non-profit that helps people develop skills that can be used to jumpstart careers in technology or trades.
The founders Frank Gaston and Alton Calloway originally brought in Diamond last year to operate the equipment for their “Anything Sports Show.”
“We just gave him a platform and he took it to the max and it’s what the AW Foundation is about. Getting people that want to do things and do them in their own people. We give them the resource and tools, everything top notch and let them go,” said Gaston.
Right before Brown left, he let listeners in on a surprise.
“It’s going to be on Fox Sports radio in a couple weeks at 7:30 a.m. right before “What’s Going On?’” said Brown Jr.
Diamond couldn't be more excited for the opportunity to have his own show on the local Fox Sports radio affiliate.
“The first time I hear myself on the radio when I play it back will be amazing and it’s going to make me more hungry because that’s just the taste of it. Like I said, I was able to accomplish this in a year so I could only imagine what I can do in the next year, or two years from now, 5 years, 10 years from now,” said Diamond.
It also reminds him of why he got into sports broadcasting in the first place.
“Rochester is such a committed city towards their sports and such a committed city towards their teams and for some people to trust me to give them their radio talk on the way to games or on the way to Bills games, or Jets games or whatever. It’s going to be special,” said Diamond.
Diamond’s radio show airs at 7:30 a.m. on Sundays 1280AM in Rochester.
