ROCHESTER, N.Y. — ​Rochester is one of the many destinations that Afghan refugees are arriving at after fleeing the Taliban in their home country.

One man's skills helped the American mission in Afghanistan. This Kabul native is now helping other refugees in Rochester start a new life.

"I hope U.S. government will continue evacuation of translators and family from Afghanistan and continue bringing them to safe place," Ferdows Ahmadi said.

Ahmadi worked as an interpreter for U.S. contractors assisting the American mission in Afghanistan. He says he became an interpreter to support his family, despite the Taliban and insurgent groups telling him to stop.

The Taliban is now targeting people like him who helped the U.S., which is why they are being granted special immigration visas.

He arrived here at the start of the pandemic last year, and is now helping other Afghan refugees settle in Rochester after escaping the terror back home, like this man and his children.

"I'm happy to be in Rochester, but I'm concerned for my family because they can't find work and because of the threats of the Taliban," he said.

Ferdows found work as an I.T. quality control staffer at General Motors in Rochester. He is still trying to get his family safely out of Afghanistan. Ferdows says his family can’t sleep because they feel like there’s no security and no one who is taking responsibility over the people in Afghanistan. He says his family calls him asking for help often and it scares him.

"That really scares me," Ferdows said. "Especially when my family is calling me and asking for help. That makes me feel cry because their life is in danger and all the time they keep asking me please help me."

As Ferdows works to make things comfortable for those fleeing the terror back home, he works night and day to get more people out of his homeland.

"I hope U.S. government will continue evacuation of translators and family from Afghanistan and continue bringing them to safe place,” Ferdows said.
