ROCHESTER, N.Y. — It's no doubt that spending time in a swimming pool is a great way to spend the summer, but it doesn't come without risks.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 3,500 people drown each year in the U.S. The CDC also says it is one of the leading causes of unintentional deaths for children ages one through nine.

Rochester-area AAA insurance agent Nate Taylor recommends that when going out to the pool that there always be adult supervision.

"I mean, it's fun, but it's dangerous,” Taylor said. “You got to keep that in mind. It's not just a bunch of fun, because objects like that can kill people every year. So you want to make sure you have the right training like CPR."

Taylor says it's also important to keep the pool clean and have a safety cover over it when it’s not in use.

"I got friends and when I come over to their house, they never a safety cover over their pool,” Taylor said. “And like I said, a child or a pet could easily fall into that pool and drown to death and a parent wouldn't even know while they are in the house."

He also believes it's not a bad idea to limit alcohol use when swimming, and if you are a pool owner contacting your insurance agent to make sure you have appropriate coverage.

"It's definitely a time to have fun and relax,” Taylor said. “Enjoy your time and just make sure you are being safe."
