ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester's current mayor and presumptive mayor attended an event together on Friday to honor local dance icon Garth Fagan.
Mayor Lovely Warren, Democratic mayoral primary winner and current City Councilman Malik Evans, Fagan, members of Garth Fagan Dance, the Eastman School of Music and Rochester Community TV were there to unveil a banner commemorating the 50th anniversary of Garth Fagan Dance. The banner hangs on the Eastman School's Miller Center building on the Gibbs Street campus.
The banner was designed through a collaboration between Garth Fagan Dance and the Eastman School of Music’s graphic design team. It was installed this week and will hang on the Miller Center until November.
“This banner serves as a beautiful focal point in the heart of our city that pays tribute to one of Rochester’s most dynamic and influential artists,” said Mayor Warren. “It’s a wonderful representation of the history and legacy of Garth Fagan Dance, which helped shape the arts and culture in our community over the past fifty years. Today, we are proud to show off that legacy with this banner.”
It's the first time Warren and Evans have been seen greeting each other in public since Evans' upset victory in Tuesday's Democratic mayoral primary.
Evans secured 66% of the unofficial vote and will run unopposed in November.
