ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Police and Mayor Lovely Warren’s office are expected to announce plans to address the recent spike in violence in the city on Thursday as officers responded to yet another homicide in the city last night.
Wednesday night’s shooting on Dewey Avenue was the second homicide this week and the 11th of the year. That’s more than double the number of homicides that had happened this time last year.
The Rochester Police Department says officers responded to the area of Dewey and Magee Avenue for the report of shots fired and a person possibly shot just before 7 p.m.
After officers arrived, they learned that a 29-year-old man from Rochester has been driven to Rochester General Hospital in a private vehicle. It was initially believed that he had non-life-threatening injuries, but his condition took a turn and he later died at the hospital.
This is what Captain Frank Umbrino had to say at the scene on Dewey Avenue last night about the recent violence.
"We know who the bad seeds are. It's not a secret, like I said," said Capt. Frank Umbrino, at the scene Wednesday. "The majority of the people in the city are good people. Right now, we have a small group of people who feel emboldened, and it's showing in the violence that's going on every night. So we know who the bad guys are; we just need the tools and the support to be able to conduct the enforcement upon those people when they're breaking the laws."
No arrest has been made in connection to this shooting yet. Umbrino says this area was busy during the time of the shooting, and asks if anyone saw anything to call 911.
Mayor Warren issued a statement Wednesday night saying she was directing the police chief to implement additional targeted enforcement efforts across the city.
