Nearly 200 cars took part in the "Hangover Gets a Double Shot" race at Land of Legends Raceway in Canandaigua on New Year's Day.
Paul Cole, the organizer, says this race has been a part of New Year’s traditions in Upstate New York for the past two decades and a pandemic wasn't going to stop it, even if fans couldn't attend.
However the race was still available live online.
"We have to keep the wheels turning. As soon as you stop, things don't get started again," said Cole.
He added that's unfortunately been the case for so many businesses.
"We have to work together as a society to find the answers and solutions and make sure we keep those things going. Stopping is bad. Keeping things moving forward is good and that's what we had to do this year is find ways to work within the rules, be productive. We want people to be healthy. We want them to do well," said Cole.
Cole believes the biggest reason to keep the race going was to provide hope going into 2021 to the drivers and the fans.
"The physical part is bad enough,” Cole said. “We pray and have concern for everyone that's in the hospital or suffering from coronavirus but it's just important to remember the mental aspect that we provide good therapy, in this case, good throttle therapy for our fans and drivers.”
