Monroe County Democratic legislators are calling for an independent redistricting commission to draw new district lines based on the 2020 U.S. Census.
A similar proposal from County Executive Adam Bello was defeated in the legislature earlier this month.
Democratic legislators say county Republicans have come out with their own redistricting plan, which wouldn't allow new redrawn districts to take effect until 2024.
The independent commission would be made up of the two commissioners of the county board of elections, two retired judges, and other representatives coming from voter and minority rights organizations.
Democrats also tell Spectrum News that the commission would build accountability and transparency into redistricting.
"This is not about politicians being able to redraw lines. This is about our community being represented equally," Yversha Roman, County Minority Leader for Democratic Caucus, said.
County Democrats will reintroduce the proposal at a legislature meeting on October 13.
In response, County Republican Majority Leader Steve Brew said, "Monroe County already has a bipartisan redistricting commission that has worked for six decades. The only time it didn’t work was in 1991 when Democrats controlled redistricting."
