If there’s one thing about 2020 that I’ll always remember, this is the summer that I was truly one with nature. The summer when the expression ‘take a hike’ has a whole new meaning.

And I’m not the only one.

“Well we actually decided to do a hike for her birthday. Her birthday is tomorrow; she’s a big outdoor person,” said Emily Collins, of West Seneca.

So instead of a birthday party, Collins is taking her friend on a birthday hike at Devil’s Hole State Park in Niagara Falls.

“It’s a fun hike. I love doing the stairs. And the views, you can’t really beat,” she said.

And she’s right about the views: they are expansive and beautiful — but those stairs lots and lots of stairs, not so much.

It’s a two-and-a-half-mile loop through rough terrain carved by ice 12,000 years ago, and now a place for 12-year-olds to explore.

We’re excited about going back up. We’re going to count ‘em. We’re going to see what we can do,” said Lindsey Cochrane, of Ithaca.

People who count them say there are about 400 steps — that take you 300 feet in elevation.

It’s enough to wear out your hiking boots, and give you the workout you’re really not looking for.
