The Churchville community celebrated its health care workers Saturday, one finger licking bite at a time.
Members of the Churchville Lions Club and Volunteer Fire Department got up bright and early to make hundreds of chicken barbecue plates as part of its Giving Back Day.
While most of the dinners were sold to the public, Jim Ehrmentraut of the Churchville Lions Club says a few were set aside for the health care workers of Unity Hospital in Greece.
"You can give money to units or to the hospitals, but it's not the workers who benefit. That's why we wanted to give to the workers who actually put their lives on the line," said Ehrmentraut.
Tom is a registered nurse at Unity Hospital.
"We realize the work that we are doing is important and the fire department has had as many challenges as we have with this whole COVID pandemic, and it's nice to see them reach out and community groups like the lions club reaching out to help support their first responders," said Tom.
For Scott Flagler of the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department, giving back to the healthcare workers is just a reminder that they are a valued member of the first responder team.
"We appreciate what our members with the COVID, a lot of members have families and they are initial help for the people that need it and they came out. Like Jim said to all the workers, our thoughts are with them and we wanted to help them out," Flagler said.
