Gym owners in New York are happy that in a week they can reopen their doors to their members, giving them a chance to work out once again.

What You Need To Know

  • Gov. Cuomo made the announcement Monday that gyms can reopen on August 24

  • Athletic Apex Health Clubs in Penfield have taken several social distancing measures

  • Gyms have to require mandatory mask mandates and must limit the occupancy to 33 percent

Inside Athletic Apex Health Clubs in Penfield it's empty, but in a week that will change.

"Opening and being able to tell our members that we're going to be able to serve them again is very, we're just thrilled," said Jeff Sanders, CEO of Athletic Apex Health Clubs.

Gov. Cuomo made the announcement Monday that gyms can reopen on August 24. Gyms have to require mandatory mask mandates and must limit the occupancy to 33 percent.

"We moved everything away so we have six feet in-between everything. Our group classes, we have marked where people can stand, where they can be prepared to have that social distancing," said Sanders.

Local governments must determine whether or not gyms can have indoor classes. Local health departments must also inspect the facilities before they open or two weeks after they have opened. Sanders says he hopes getting people back into exercising will help build up immune systems.

"We've got testimony videos throughout the state of people that have been sending into us, into the alliance, you know just talking and saying listen, you know, some of them have had it, some of them have not had COVID-19. And those who have had it have recovered very quickly because of their immune systems and how strong they were because they did work out," said Sanders.

Sanders says the health clubs will be prepared to open their doors next week.

"We're ready to come in. I believe we have things that aren't even on the guidelines that are above and beyond," said Sanders.
