A Penfield woman is gaining neighborhood support for a cause that is close to her heart. BLM are three letters that are important to Lynn Acquafondata.

What You Need To Know

  • A Penfield couple says they received a threatening note to remove their BLM sign from their yard

  • Lynn Acquafondata says she and her husband found a small plastic bag in their driveway containing a note along with rocks

  • The couple says that sheriff’s deputies told them it was a matter of free speech

"We have been very disturbed by all the things that are happening in the country right now with violence against Black people that’s been caught on camera," said Acquafondata.

Acquafondata and her husband decided signs on their front lawn would help support the Black Lives Matter cause. Then just days after placing them in the yard, they said they discovered a small plastic bag at the end of their driveway. Inside they say they found rocks and a note telling them to take down the signs.

"Even if they think it’s offensive, that’s their prerogative, but then saying that if we don’t take the signs down, we won’t be so nice next time," Acquafondata said.

She saw the note as a threat, but says sheriff’s deputies told them it was a matter of free speech. It wasn’t long before the neighborhood got wind of what had happened and many chose to support the couple and placed BLM signs outside their homes.

"Yesterday there were four more signs in the neighborhood, and other people have ordered the signs as well," she said.

Even though Acquafondata’s neighbor feels that signs can create problems, he doesn’t think they should be threatened.

"I don’t like the idea of a threat. And you don’t know who’s threatening and you don’t know how far they’re going to go," said John Rydberg of Penfield.

Lynn says a bag of rocks and a threatening note is not enough for her to remove the signs.

"People have given their lives to help Black people and to overcome this injustice, so I can keep a sign in my yard," she stated.
