"We walked out our backdoor and we found this kitty on our backbench covered in flies and looking like he was dying," said Jones.
Jones notified animal rescue workers. Rescued Treasures Pet Adoption came over to try and get the animal some help.
"Our foster went to help. Found the cat, took it to the emergency vet where it was determined that the injuries were not compatible, so the animal was humanely euthanized," said Jennifer Everett, cat adoption and intake coordinator.
A veterinarian believes the animal likely had been burned by fireworks. Kate Sullivan from the Pet Adoption Network says animal abuse cases are prevalent in the city.
"There's a huge population of abandoned cats in the city that go to people cause they're desperate. They want food, they've been in a house, they have an owner and poor Buttercup made a really bad choice," said Sullivan.
Jones is a cat owner herself and says she is disgusted that someone would harm a cat.
"Incredibly sad to think that there's cats out here, and I'm hearing more from people like Kate and my rescue girls that are suffering like this all the time. And I had no idea until it was dumped right on my backdoor," said Jones.
