As the coronavirus has placed many people out of work, the Salvation Army of Canandaigua is seeking the public's help to fill its food pantry through a virtual food drive.
"We have seen our donations drop significantly," said Major Pamela Rhodes.
For Major Rhodes, it's deeply concerning because many more people are coming to the Salvation Army for food.
Rhodes pointed out they've provided food for more 350 people between March and April 3, and nearly half of those were first-time visitors.
She added within that same time span in 2019, the group only served 55.
While food donations are still accepted at their next office, Rhodes is encouraging monetary donations through the Salvation Army website to keep everyone safe.
"We can get a better deal buying in bulk, and so the dollars stretch to more items per bag," Rhodes explained.
Rhodes feels as the coronavirus pandemic continues, the need won’t stop at food.
"People are going to be coming to us for utility assistance, for housing, for rent, mortgage payment, things like that, and we are nowhere near financially prepared to handle that, so we are depending on the public," said Rhodes.
Jennifer Naracong and Tracy Stevens have witnessed firsthand how far donations to the Salvation Army of Canandaigua can go.
"I'm better off because I'm retired, but still it's stretching my dollar a little bit," said Naracong.
"I know they have their own families to worry about. You know, just donate a little bit because there are people who really can't do without their help, and they’re appreciative of anything that they do," said Stevens.
Major Rhodes believes although the need is great, the residents of Canandaigua and surrounding areas will help them refill the pantry.
"By providing the services that we do, we're really providing not just food, utilities, or rent, but we are providing hope for people when some people right now really feel helpless and hopeless," said Rhodes.
The virtual food drive is active now and can be found here.
They are also accepting food and monetary donations at their office at 110 Saltonstall St. in Canandaigua on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
