On the hillside of Binghamton University's campus is Saratoga Hall. It’s the dorm complex where you'll find Jacob Goodman.

"I have a really big problem with sitting in a classroom, learning a bunch of crap and never applying it," said Goodman, a junior at BU.

A mechanical engineering major, Goodman loves to build things.

"I find I learn far more out of the classroom when I make something like this, or build a CO-2 laser."

The junior created a ventilator that is mainly made up of parts from Walmart. It was all fueled by a challenge from one of his professors.

"I said I'll have a prototype for you by Monday and he said okay, funny joke but maybe we should talk about this. I said no, no I will have a prototype for you by Monday. And he said I'm calling your bluff, no way!"

Put together with a lunch box and a handful of other parts, Goodman sure enough sent the email out Monday morning.

"He was very impressed he was not expecting me to have a prototype done," said Goodman.

Professors said he should apply for a patent. But Goodman wants to make his prototype more efficient.

"The way I look at it is I can spend my time doing one of two things. Either filing for a provisional patent or making version two. I'm going to pick making version two, I want to save some lives I don't care about the money."
