On the campus of the College at Brockport, students are getting ready for mid-terms and spring break, but paying close attention to the latest news on the coronavirus.

"Just washing my hands a lot and trying to avoid things, like touching doors and touching my eyes and face," said Olivia Hayden, a freshman student of the College at Brockport.

Meanwhile, a dormitory at Brockport may be designated to house some of the roughly 300 SUNY students who are scheduled to return from countries impacted by the coronavirus. Per the request of Governor Andrew Cuomo, those returning abroad students will spend 14 days in mandatory quarantine.

"We've been in touch with the SUNY leadership. There is a dormitory on campus at SUNY Brockport that has been labeled and has been identified as a potential location but a lot of those details are still coming out," said Dr. Michael Mendoza, commissioner of Public Health in Monroe County.

On a visit to Brockport Thursday, SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson would only say the focus remains on student safety.

"We're working right now with Department of Health at the state and also locally to see where students can be quarantined, and it's a pretty fluid situation," said Johnson.

"If we ever did get confirmation, I think we would first and foremost be looking at what kind of guidelines are they sending to us, what are they looking for in terms of numbers, services provided," said Fred Rion, the emergency manager for the College at Brockport.

A team of department heads has been meeting on a regular basis to make sure that the campus is well-prepared should there be an outbreak. They continue to follow CDC guidelines as well as communicate with the local health department, and make sure that information is passed onto students.

"Just really just kind of general education, you know, keeping people calm about it," said Rion.

Students and staff will be on the campus for another week, and not just Brockport, but many college communities are asking everyone to carefully consider travel plans during their break.
