A Batavia-native musician is returning home to perform in a Broadway musical's 50th anniversary tour.
A practicing professional musician for two decades, Joey Pero’s resume is impressive as it is extensive. His latest is "Jesus Christ Superstar," where he’s been touring as the first trumpet since September.
Pero says the trumpet is powerful instrument.
“It has a certain amount of fire and energy that not all instruments have," Pero said. "It definitely is one that can ruin or make a performance, I found that out.”
He started playing in school in Batavia.
“There were fantastic school teachers and programs, and I was in school at a time when we were at the top of our game in jazz band and stuff like that,” Pero said.
And he credits parents that loved music for sparking that passion.
“I fell in love with drum corp when I was a kid, so we had a lot of drum corp stuff going on," His father Joseph Pero said. "But then added was everything from Frank Sinatra to Dean Martin to the Beatles and rock operas.”
Throughout his career, he’s performed in numerous Broadway musicals, both as an actor and musician.
“I’m just happy and proud of my son, always, no matter what. And the main thing is he cares about people, he cares about what he’s doing,” his father said.
And while he’s lived in New York City for 20 years now, the show is bringing him home this week where they’re performing at the Rochester Auditorium Theater Tuesday through Sunday.
“It’s a vacation, a bonus vacation.” Pero said. “It rings to so many people’s hearts that you can feel that energy when we start those first notes and the guitar starts to play. It’s electric.”
He says getting to perform at home is a real treat.
“People in Batavia and Western New York, since I’ve been in the circuit for so many years, have been so good to me and so positive. Just to be back is incredible,” Pero said.
