A Brockport teacher is dead following a bicycle accident this weekend.
It happened on Sweden Walker Road in Clarkson around 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, a pickup truck heading south hit woman who was riding her bike. The bicyclist was taken to a Rochester area hospital with critical injuries, where she ultimately died the following day.
Brockport Central School District identified the bicyclist as Carolyn “Carrie” Ray, a second grade teacher at Barclay Elementary School.
“Carrie was a teacher with the district for almost 15 years and will be deeply missed. Resources and counselors will be available to provide emotional support for both students and staff,” district officials said in a statement.
Deputies said the 81-year-old pickup truck driver was not hurt in the accident. He was issued a traffic citation for failure to safely pass a bicycle.
Investigators said alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor.
Tri-County Youth Hockey is holding a candlelight vigil at 6:30 p.m. Monday. It takes place at Hamlin Beach Park in "Area 3."
“Carrie was a vibrant member of our school family and will be missed by all," Brockport Central School District Superintendent Lesli Myers said in a statement. "She had several connections with many individuals and groups in our community and left an indelible mark in those she met. On a personal note, she welcomed my mother as a volunteer in her classroom, and I was enriched by knowing her. My deepest sympathies go to her family, the staff at Barclay and our community.”
