The Monroe County Department of Public Health is investigating a confirmed case of measles in a person who recently traveled through the county.

The county is looking to identify others who may have been in contact with the individual and urge residents, especially those who travel internationally and are not fully protected, to get the MMR vaccine.

The measles case was confirmed by the county on Saturday, September 21. The individual spent most of the time in Webster, according to county officials.

The individual arrived at the Rochester airport on Monday, September 16 and left on Friday, September 20, according to Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo at a press conference Thursday. The individual departed Rochester to Los Angeles, California on an American Airlines flight.

“Symptoms of measles generally appear in two stages. In the first stage, which lasts two to four days, the individual may have a runny nose, cough and a slight fever," according to a statement from the MCDPH. “Eyes may become reddened and sensitive to light while the fever gradually rises each day, often peaking as high as 103 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Small bluish white spots surrounded by a reddish area may also appear on the inside of the mouth.”

The investigation is still ongoing. Officials say the single best way to prevent measles is to be vaccinated. For more information, visit https://www.health.ny.gov/publications/2170 and http://www.cdc.gov/measles/index.html.
