Congressman Joe Morelle is headed to the southern border to get a first-hand look at migrant detention centers and processing facilities. He and 23 other members of Congress will stop in El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico.
"We'll be meeting with a whole host of folks on both sides of the issue, and I think there is common ground to be found," Morelle said. "When people decide that it's not the most important thing in this conversation— it's what is in their political interest— then we'll be able to reach common ground."
The trip comes following numerous reports of unsanitary and even inhumane conditions at detention centers.
Morelle says he hopes that by seeing the centers in person he and his colleagues can work towards a solution that secures the border while humanely treating those seeking asylum in the U.S.
