Here's an outdoor field trip opportunity!

Wegmans is hosting several public tours at its organic farm and orchard on West Lake Road in Canandaigua throughout the summer.

The two-hour tours take guests around the 300-acre farm.

There, they can see where and how Wegmans grows organic fruits and veggies in the region that would otherwise be shipped in from the West Coast.

The farm is like a test farm to figure out the best way to organically grow produce in New York’s shorter growing season.

Successful crops like the Badger Flame Beets and Callaloo greens will soon grow at some of Wegmans 30 local partner-growers.

"It is this great counter-balance of fresh-forward innovation and new faces to agriculture, but then this deep-rooted knowledge that we are able to share back and forth with our partner farmers,” said Kaitlin Voellinger. “Our partner farmers have long legacies of growing so generational growing trying to best support what we can for East Coast organics."

For a closer look, the next Wegmans Organic Farm and Orchard tour is Wednesday with two more scheduled in August and two tours planned in September.

The $10 tours are for ages 12 and up.
