Baseball players typically wear their names on the back of jerseys but Greece Tornado baseball players had a different mission in mind.
The team kicked off their first game of the summer season on Saturday, honoring local fallen soldiers and their families.
The team came up with the idea and reached out to the non-profit organization Gold Star Mothers to get involved. It’s an organization comprised of mothers who have lost a child in the line of duty.
"It's really humbling to know that they gave their lives so that I could live mine and do what I wanted to do instead of going out there," Travers MacNeal said. "They put in the effort every day to protect me; protect my rights; everything."
Commemorative jerseys displaying the names of 13 local fallen soldiers will be worn all season.
"We'll always keep these men and women in mind. It's not just about the fallen; it's about everyone that are out there to help us; keep our country safe," Dan Hasenauer of Hilton.
