An attorney for the Hilton High School graduate charged in the deadly crash that killed her best friend and injured another driver is reviewing a plea agreement that would reduce criminal charges.
Police say Brianna Scarpulla was driving June 10, 2018, with her friend and fellow Hilton High cheerleader Paige Smith, when the vehicle crossed the center lane and struck an oncoming SUV on Latta Road in Greece. Police say Scarpulla was driving 70 miles an hour in a 40 mile-per-hour zone.
Smith died in the crash, which took place before both she and Scarpulla were to graduate from high school.
Scarpulla was hospitalized, but later charged with manslaughter for Smith's death and assault for injuries suffered by a 64-year-old Greece woman who was driving the SUV.
Defense Attorney Stephen Sercu offered no comment on the details of the agreement presented by the Ontario County District Attorney's Office. The case was moved to Ontario County after it was disclosed that a staff member at the Monroe County District Attorney's Office knew one of the girls' families.
No court date has been set for response to the plea offer.
Authorities say an inquiry has been submitted in response to the plea agreement related to Scarpulla's status as an out-of-state college student. Scarpulla attended the University of Tampa the last nine months.
As both families prepare to mark the one-year anniversary of the tragedy, friend Dominic Faticone has launched a t-shirt sale commemorating Paige's passing. Proceeds will benefit a fund started after her death.
