Drivers may have noticed that new flashing yellow arrow signal lights are popping up in turn-only lanes across the state.

Motorists are familiar with the green arrow for turning in a turn-only lane and the red arrow for waiting to turn, but now many intersections have the additional yellow light.

According to New York State Vehicle & Traffic Law Section 1113b: "Vehicular traffic facing a circular yellow signal or yellow arrow with rapid intermittent flashes may proceed through the intersection or past such signal only with caution."

When the lights were first unveiled, many drivers were confused and several accidents were reported.

Some of the confusion was due to the fact that “flashing red arrows and flashing yellow arrow indications have the same meaning as the corresponding flashing circular indications," according to NYS Law Section 1113c.

Once drivers become accustomed to the change, traffic flow will become more efficient and should make your drive time commute a little easier.
