Buffalo Sabres Head Coach Phil Housley was let go Sunday after two seasons and a playoff drought reaching its 8th consecutive year. The team made the announcement via a tweet.

Sabres General Manager Jason Botterill held a press conference Sunday to discuss the matter. Botterill said results in the second half of the season were not there and described things as being "inconsistent."

Botterill continued that blame fell on coaches, players, and management, saying Housley was not given a good enough roster.

For that roster, Botterill said there was a need to add more skill to advance the group. He said top players were too heavily relied on and cited the necessity of "depth scoring."

When asked why Housley was not let go mid-season, Botterill said, "The team showed they had success in the first half [of the season] ... I trusted the players."

During the conference, Botterill did confirm the search for a new coach had already begun.

"When I was hired two years ago, my job was to get a winner. To get playoffs on a consistent basis. It's gonna be crucial to find the right coach that can help us through that process," Botterill said.

The Buffalo Sabres found little satisfaction in closing out their season with a lopsided win on Saturday. The team wrapped up the season with a 7-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

The Sabres finished out of the playoffs and in the draft lottery after starting the season 17-6-2 and ranking first overall on Nov. 27. They finished the season going 3-13-2.
