Police are investigating what led up to a shooting at a Gates bar during closing time.

Nearly 500 people were in attendence for the girls night promotional event.

Nearly 20 officers were on scene as the venue cleared out around 1:30 a.m. Sunday when a few fights broke out. Two women were being taken into custody for disorderly conduct when gun shots rang out.

Police say five rounds were fired from two guns, but no one was hit.

A grey SUV was seen speeding from the scene. Officers tried to stop the driver, but were unsuccessful.

Police say the event at the Wheels Up Tavern on Brooks Avenue is one of the ongoing “promoter parties” that are occurring around Monroe County. A promoter reaches out to a local bar to sponsor a party. Admission is charged at the door, profitting the promotor.

Gates Town Supervisor Cosmo Giunta says they are working to determine the legality of these parties.

"We have to get them to start listening," said Cosmo Giunta. "It's scary not only as a town official, but as a father. You have kids or young adults that are getting to this age, you want their safety."

In the meantime, Gates Police will be meeting with officials from the Liquor Authority on Monday to seek an immediate alcohol license revocation for a disorderly premises. Police say they expect cooperation from property owner Maeemm Butt.

"I'm very confident that he is going to voluntarily suspend any more of these promoted parties because of what happened last night," said Gates Chief of Police James VanBrederode.
