Josh Woodward, the Albany firefighter who has been battling complications from sepsis, is out of the hospital.

Woodward was officially discharged from St. Peter's on Wednesday, following a six-week fight that led to multiple surgeries and amputations. His family and friends, including David Mazzella, says it's a day of celebration.

"The next step is just the next step, and that's the most important one he's going to take now and each day. He's just continually getting better, getting stronger," Mazzella said.

The Albany Airport Fire Department was there to celebrate this milestone in his recovery.

"One minute he was going to make it, and the next minute he wasn't," Chief David Cook said. "That was the tough part. We were ready to make plans for the worst case scenario."

Woodward, whose fight has been chronicled on the Woodward Strong Facebook page, will head to a rehabilitation facility. His wife Chelsea posted recently that Josh had finished dialysis, and is recovering from surgeries to remove his toes and part of his right arm.
