Leaders in the fight against the opioid epidemic are celebrating the opening of Gates to Recovery's sixth location.
"Today we brought somebody, a client, over to Helio Health Detox Center. At 8 a.m. we were able to walk them in and get them a bed this morning. You know three months ago that probably wouldn't have happened," said Gates Police Chief James VanBrederode.
He says overdoses and fatalities are down for the second month in a row. Local law enforcement is optimistic the trends are changing because of addiction treatment facilities like Gates to Recovery.
The addiction and support services drop-in center provides Narcan training and detox beds.
Sarah Jamieson received a device a few weeks ago to minimize withdrawal and help her get clean.
"I've been to other places and I feel like this is way different. Everyone is very nice here, they understand. It's a lot different, in a good way. A very good way," said Jamieson of Greece.
The new Gates to Recovery walk-in center is located at Extended Medical Services, 2116 East Henrietta Road. It's open the first and third Friday of every month from 2 to 5 p.m.
