An informational meeting was held in Brockport on Thursday to discuss Reimagine RTS, a plan that would change the way that people in outlying communities access public transportation.

A consultant offered a recommendation to change how buses run in and out of Brockport. Currently buses run Monday through Friday, in the mornings and evenings with a gap during the middle of the day.

The new RTS proposal would implement "mobility zones," where underused routes would be replaced by smaller shuttles that would connect to a bus running from downtown to Rochester Tech Park. Additionally, riders would be able to request rides "on demand."

Prior to the meeting a letter was sent to RTS highlighting the needs of the community. It was signed by several Brockport officials including the village mayor and superintendent of schools.

In addition to servicing families and college students, urban/suburban program students also utilize RTS buses in and out of Brockport.

The meeting was also well attended by residents of the Lifetime Assistance Inc., a group that helps people with disabilities achieve independence, with a large amount of those residents using RTS services.

"For the most part it's the on demand, the door-to-door service," said Senior Vice President Ernie Haywood. "People with disabilities may have physical disabilities and waiting at a bus stop or waiting in an open air area is not something they can do. Also for some individuals having the complicated schedule of having to go from one bus to another is difficult."

A final proposal is expected this summer.
