Some elementary students are picking up a microphone and testing their broadcast skills, all as an initiative to develop better social and emotional skills.
Craig Hill Elementary School’s third, fourth and fifth graders play out different conflicts each month introducing new skills into the broadcast. Some of this year's lessons have focused on respect, responsibility, self-awareness and social awareness. That’s where the reporters come in, helping students resolve their conflict and report on the lesson learned.
"We’re trying to demonstrate how to problem solve skills when you have a disagreement with each other. Our disagreement is about seats on the bus. Shahawna wanted to sit with me and I wanted to sit with someone else and she thought I wouldn’t sit with her because I was mad at her, but I just wanted to sit with my friend because I hadn’t seen him in a while so I wanted to talk to him," said Brody Jonas.
"You’re a whole different person after something. I was this one person and after the broadcast you turn into a really good person and teach people different ways to use their problem solving skills and make learning better and fun,” said Joseph Newborn.
The final version of the broadcast is played for the entire school so teachers can continue to reinforce the skills and lessons learned throughout the school year.
