Finishing off a 44-year education career, Superintendent of the West Irondequoit Central School District Jeff Crane is set to retire at the end of the year.

Before Crane being appointed superintendent in 2003, he was principal of Irondequoit High School for six years. Prior to that, he served as principal at Victor Junior and Senior High Schools. But before fulfilling any administrative roles he taught in Brighton and Fairport Central School Districts.

“I’ve had a great career,” said Crane.

Even though he will be stepping down from the position, he hopes major projects he's pushed during his tenure remain an option and for others to continue, including full-day kindergarten and AP government courses.

“When I started because of 'The Neighborhood School Concept' in past traditions of that, we didn't have hot lunches at the K-3 level, we didn't have breakfast for any kid and we now have that in every building,” Crane said.

He tells Spectrum News he's confident the next superintendent will embody and embrace the work of the district.

“It’s time for a fresh set of eyes in this office and what I know for sure is that this district has had a great tradition of excellence.”

Jon Hunter, who was appointed interm superintendent, will assume the role in the new year. He has more than 45 years of experience as an educator and an administrator.

As for the future, Crane says nothing is set in stone but he would like to focus on spending more time with his family and work in social justice.
