Rochester City Court's newest judge was sworn into office at the Hall of Justice on Thursday.

Judge Melissa Barrett was appointed by Mayor Lovely Warren. She will fill the bench left vacant by Leticia Astacio's removal.

Dozens of family, friends and fellow city court judges surrounded Barrett during the ceremony.

Barrett previously served as principal court attorney for city court. She also served as an assistant public defender for the Monroe County Public Defender’s Office, and as an assistant district counsel for the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Mayor Warren selected Barrett after she was recommended by the City’s Judicial Screening Committee.
