LEXINGTON, N.C.-   The city of Lexington held an active shooter training session one week after the latest mass shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh.

Instructors in the course stressed the importance of "Run, Hide, Fight." Law enforcement explained that you should run away from the scene if possible, hide if you cannot run, and fight if your life depends on it.

Participants say the training is crucial.

"I felt like I needed more tools to help me in everyday life since things are escalating, like in school lock downs and active shooters in public," Angie Walker said.

Law enforcement also stressed the importance of properly interacting with them on the scene of active shooters.

"If the citizens will take a class like this and get to know a little bit more about what our side of it is, we can work together as far as if a situation like this happens and we can reduce the number of injuries," Cpl. Mitch Kepley with the Davidson County Sheriff's Office said.

The course organizer said because active shooter situations are common, it is important to pre-plan.
