PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Standing-room only crowds flocked to the opening of Buffalo Bills training camp at St. John Fisher College Thursday. Among those who came to see their very first Bills camp in-person was a visitor who rarely is lost in a crowd.
Ezra Castro, better known as ‘Pancho Billa,’ came all the way from Texas. The now-legendary superfan of the red, white and blue arrived from Cowboys country as the leader of Bills backers in Dallas.
"It's unbelievable, unbelievable. The wait's over. Finally back and couldn't be more excited,” said Castro.
The Bills organization has taken to ‘Pancho’ like few other individual fans. Owner Kim Pegula greeted him on the sidelines Thursday. The club had Castro introduce their third round pick at the NFL Draft this past spring. He did the same for the Bills’ cousins, the Sabres.
His fame lies in his colorful display of fandom while simultaneously fighting cancer. He arrived just a day after his latest chemo treatment.
"I’m doing good. I wanted to be here this year. Because who knows where I'll be next year. I felt good and I said, ‘I got to make this happen, let's do it,’" he said.
He's staying with newly-made Bills friends in Rochester, taking in as much of the team as he can and letting the spirit that he delivers to others through ‘Pancho Billa’ well up in him.
"Passion man, that's all it is is being passionate about the Bills, letting the season start. And the campus. I can already feel the campus and emotion building up in me,” said Castro.
