ROCHESTER N.Y. — An organization started at the end of World War I has crossed over into its 100th year.

The American Legion Department of New York is celebrating not only its centennial, but the continuation of the organization's legacy.

Legionnaires and family gathered Thursday outside of the Geva Theater, formerly known as the Convention Center (Old State Armory) to unveil a plaque of where it all began.

“This was the first convention in New York for the American Legion so that’s very fitting to have the 100th year,” said Gary Schacher of the American Legion.

Navy Veteran and Department Commander Rena Nessler of Geneva is New York's first female department commander. She said it is an honor to be a woman in her role.

“Women have been eligible for the American legion for since its inception in 1919. It hasn’t been all accepted within the veteran’s organizations that women are veterans,” said Nessler.

The organization set a goal to reach 103,000 members. Nessler says at this time it’s at a little below 100,000.

Over the four-day event, officials say we can expect 1,000 people to take part.
