Monroe County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of a Churchville-Chili student for making what Sheriff’s investigators believe to be "credible threats" against Churchville-Chili High School.
Deputies did not release the name of the suspect due to age.
According to officials, the juvenile, who is under 16-years-old, is charged with Making a Terroristic Threat, Falsely Reporting an Incident and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Parents were notified on Wednesday following the arrest.
"I'm hopeful that our families understand that we're being as transparent as possible in this situation. I think that this would be a very different conversation if we didn't come to the point late last week that this was not going to be actionable," said Churchville-Chili Superintendent Lori Orologio.
Investigators say this stems from a statement made on social media on April 2 during the district's spring break.
"The means of the threat were certainly credible upon our first investigation. As we started working with the family, and speaking with the student, we were able to determine that whatever credibility that threat had originally we were able to remove and we were able to take those means away from that person and that allowed us to slow things down and deal more thoroughly with the investigation," said Monroe County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Michael Fowler."
The district's anonymous helpline also received a tip about the threat.
“The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office takes all threats seriously and actively began investigating this matter as soon as it was reported and brought to our attention,” said Sheriff Todd K. Baxter. “We will not tolerate any threats or acts of violence, especially against our most precious, our children. We immediately began working in collaboration with the Churchville-Chili School District to ensure all students were safe and continue to do so."
The juvenile was arrested Wednesday afternoon and issued an appearance ticket for Family Court at a later date.
