LYONS, N.Y. -- Police announced the arrests of two teens on Tuesday in connection with the stabbing death of a Sodus High School senior in December.
Zack Dwello, 17, was found unresponsive with multiple stab wounds next to his car in Perkins Park in Newark on December 8.
Police identified the suspects as Hunter Peck, 18, and Vaughn Gray, 19, of Newark.
Officials say it remains unclear why Dwello was in Newark that night, but believe the murder was a result of a robbery.
Authorities say he called 911 for help and said he had been stabbed, before losing consciousness.
He was rushed to Newark Wayne Community Hospital and then airlifted to Strong Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Dwello was a senior at Sodus High School and played hockey, baseball, and ran cross country.
Both suspects have been charged with first and second degree murder along with three counts of first degree robbery.
“I’m glad they caught somebody and brought them in for justice,” said Stephen Discavage, who retired from Newark State School. He was born and raised in Rochester, but has lived in Newark for nearly 20 years.
“It’s a lot different now. Kids are a lot different than how I grew up, I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s the upbringing, but people here in general are fine and fair,” said Discavage.
According to the Newark police department, Peck has been arrested before for falsely reporting an incident at the Williamson BOCES.
Both suspects are due in court on Thursday.
