ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The driver who Rochester police say hit and killed a pedestrian and seriously injured another Saturday morning was driving drunk.

Chermasia Collins, 29, is charged with vehicular homicide, DWI, reckless driving and other traffic violations. She pleaded not guilty to those charges Monday morning.

Police say Collins was speeding on Lyell Avenue between Child and Myrtle Streets around 3 a.m. when she lost control, jumped a curb and hit two pedestrians on the sidewalk.

Jordan Askew, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alex Kunz, 21, was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with serious injuries including a brain injury, dislocated hip, broken ribs and a broken femur. He remains in guarded condition.

Court documents say Collins admitted to to an officer at the scene that she had been drinking alcohol before driving and striking the victims.

Collins qualifies for a public defender, but due to a conflict she will have to be appointed an attorney.

She's being held in the Monroe County Jail. Her bail was set at $30,000 cash.
