ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A man is expected to recover after fire crews say he tried to battle flames in his home by himself Wednesday afternoon.

The Rochester Fire Department says the blaze broke out around 4:30 p.m.

They arrived to the home on Adams Street to heavy flames coming out of the back of the building on the second floor.

The man who tried to fight the blaze suffered burns, smoke inhalation and injuries sustained from falling down the stairs.

He was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Battalion Chief Jonathan Young says everyone else made it out, and credits working fire detectors for alerting them.

"Someone heard a smoke detector when they were downstairs. They went upstairs and they saw a good volume of fire. They attempted to put out the fire and I think that's when the injury occurred. It is dangerous, it's not something for the non-professional. When you hear that detector, get out of the house and call 911," said Young.

The Red Cross is assisting the five adults and seven children living in the home.

The cause is still under investigation.
