ROCHESTER, N.Y. — In the local battle against substance abuse, few have been on the front lines as long as the Outreach Community Center in Rochester.
“When I started outreach, it was in our home. It was me and my wife and five people. $5 and a dream,” said Outreach Community Center Founder Bishop Herman Dailey.
In 1978, Herman Dailey started his road to recovery. According to Dailey, he battled a life of alcohol, drugs and gangs. However, he decided to walk away from that lifestyle to serve a greater purpose.
“I love talking about recovery. I love talking about the God of my understanding and this is the message that will carry throughout the city of Rochester and all they have to do it just come,” said Bishop Dailey.
Bishop Dailey says he knows that the outreach`s counseling and 12-step program has saved thousands of lives. His program is free for anyone with substance abuse.
“I was lost. I was homeless and I was spiritually broken. Knowing that they were here and the outreach center was here was the only way I think I came out of that dark place,” said Ursula Clark-Speidel.
Ursula is now in recovery. She has been sober since 2008.
“I just wanted to tell them my story and be able to help them with my story and let them know that they are not alone. We are family,” said Clark-Speidel.
Bishop Dailey and Ursula many others Friday, November 17 for the Outreach Community Center`s 32 year anniversary.
Former NFL Player Tony Collins will be the guest speaker, and will share his struggles with substance abuse. It will be held at the Ramada Plaza in Rochester. Tickets are still on sale. For more information call (585) 328-0887.
