ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Rochester's new Amtrak station is officially open.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Rep. Louise Slaughter were on hand Friday to officially open the station at a midday ceremony.
Construction began back in 2014 to replace Rochester's aging station which was originally designed to be temporary 40 years ago.
The new terminal itself, and the adjoining train platforms are compliant with the American with Disabilities Act.
The new station is expected to reduce delays and improve functionality.
Slaughter, who helped secure $15 million in federal funding to get the project moving, says she thinks it will be a big boost to the neighborhood around it.
"You don't build a railroad station overnight," Slaughter said. "You don't build photonics overnight. You don't build Remade overnight. The important thing is that we have them going, to keep them going and to see the great effect that all that's going to have on this community for generations to come."
The new platform, accessible through an underground tunnel, will see eight Amtrak trains run through daily, with four in each direction.
