MIAMI -- Tropical Depression Eight has been upgraded to Tropical Storm Gert as it churns northward in the western Atlantic Ocean.

Gert is located about 505 miles west-southwest of Bermuda.

Maximum sustained winds in the system are at 40 mph. Gert is moving to the north-northwest at 10 mph. The minimum pressure is 1,011 mb.

Gert is the seventh named storm of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. Gert was upgraded from a tropical depression as of 5 p.m. Sunday.

The storm will continue to move northward and eventually northeastward, moving between the Carolinas and Bermuda.

"Gert is forecast to remain a tropical storm as it passes well off of the North Carolina coastline late Monday into Tuesday," said Spectrum News Meteorologist Sandra Brogan. "Other than a possible elevated risk for rip currents along some NC beaches, no impacts are expected."

Gert will eventually accelerate into the north Atlantic Ocean and become a post-tropical low later in the week.
