KYLE, Texas -- The Kyle Police Department has deployed body cameras, making it the final law enforcement agency in Hays County to do so.
With the click of button, Police Capt. Pedro Hernandez had his camera rolling.
A little black box attached to his shirt captured our camera set-up and the entire interview.
"The officer can manually activate it. The camera can be activated when the lights and sirens are activated," explained Hernandez.
The department has deployed six cameras so far, but Hernandez said soon all 50 officers will wear one.
The video that's collected gets uploaded on a department computer.
Hernandez said this technology will help streamline evidence collection, making it all digital for the first time.
"We hand deliver a lot of the documents, cases, photos, videos, to the district attorney's office. We will now be able to share that, not only with the district attorney's office, but with other agencies electronically," said Hernandez.
Kyle is joining the rest of Hays County in using this technology.
San Marcos deployed 106 body cams in September 2016.
Hernandez said evidence collection like this is not only beneficial internally; he said the community benefits, too.
"It also will help ensure that the public knows that yes we're capturing everything on body cameras, so we're not trying to hide anything," said Hernandez.
