AUSTIN, Texas — Austin Mayor Steve Adler has returned from his visit to the nation's capital after a meeting with the head of the Department of Homeland Security.
He says he's pleased to hear it's a priority of DHS Secretary John Kelly to focus on significant criminals when it comes to detaining illegal immigrants.
Adler and several other officials from across the country met with Kelly Wednesday.
The mayor says he and others at the meeting were looking for greater clarification into recent federal immigration enforcement efforts.
Adler's seeking a legal definition of “sanctuary city” after the Trump administration threatened that cities implementing those kinds of policies would be stripped of federal grant money.
"I would like us to get to place where we have greater certainty as to what's a 'sanctuary city' and what may or may not be the targeted sanction or remedy. We just don't know that answer yet,” Adler said.
