BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Slippery road conditions are being blamed for a fatal car accident Friday morning in Brockport.

Officials from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office say a driver was traveling westbound on Route 31 when he lost control, entered the eastbound lane and was struck by a pickup truck.

Police say the driver who lost control of his vehicle, 51-year-old Richard Alphonse of Greece, was pronounced dead at the scene.

They say the driver of the pickup truck, 60-year-old Charles Rood, suffered minor injuries. Rood was transported to Rochester General Hospital as a precauction.

"The weather did play a role in it. We're still investigating. Obviously you can see the condition out here. It's quite slippery and dangerous," Capt. Jeff DelGudio said. "Unfortunately, it's a sad reminder that in conditions like these we have to be cautious and take as much precautions as we can. And safety has got to be a priority."

Alphonse was a 33-year employee of Wegmans and worked in the grocerty department in the Brockport store.

A Wegmans spokesperson released a statement saying, "We are deeply saddened at his passing, and our hearts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. A grief counselor will be on hand for our Brockport store employees."

Route 31 was closed between Owens Road and Sweden Walker Road for a few hours and hundreds of commuters in the area were re-routed.
