ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Some giant beer tanks at the Genesee Brewery Company on St. Paul Street in Rochester are going the way of the wrecking ball as part of a massive brewery expansion.
"I worked here for 40 years," said Mike Mueller, Genesee brewmaster. "These tanks weren't here when I started. Actually, I don't even think we owned the property."
Each tank held the equivalent of close to 125,000 cases of Genesee beer.
"They're kind of like icons," said Kevin Peters, a brewery employee. "They made them into beer cans, they were the tallest beer cans in the world."
Ten of those 28 tanks are coming down because a changing beer industry demands it. North American Breweries is investing close to $40 million in a brewery expansion.
"They want specialty type beers, smaller batches," Mueller said.
At one time, Genny's beer tanks were the largest in the world. However, changing times in a changing industry means their time is now up.
"It's great," Mueller said. "I think for our community to see this, it's marvelous. You know it's gonna be here a long time."
