The NYPD's animal cruelty unit is investigating a gruesome discovery in Queens.
Police say 40 frozen cats were found jammed in a pair of freezers inside a locker at the American Self Storage in Long Island City.
They say a man discovered the animals after buying the storage locker at auction, and that one of the cats had been skinned.
Sources say the woman who originally rented the unit no longer lives at her listed Brooklyn address, and police are trying to track her down.
American Self Storage released a statement saying it is shocked by the discovery and that it does not examine items brought in by tenants.
The ASPCA says it will provide forensic support for the NYPD investigation.
