ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The victim in a shooting on the city's west side on Sunday morning has been identified.
Family members say Lewis Puryear was found dead in front of a home when officers arrived on scene.
Police were called to Orchard Street just before 4:30 a.m. for a man found dead between Jay and Smith Streets. They say he had been shot in the upper body during a fight following a house party.
"It was due to a house party, it was the aftermath of a house party where we're being told an argument ensued and he was shot," said Lt. Frank DiPrimo, Rochester Police Department.
Around the same time a woman showed up at Strong Memorial Hospital with minor injuries from an incident related to the shooting.
Puryear's uncle, who is the head of the United Christian Leadership Ministry in Rochester, issued the following statement:
"This most recent death by gun violence certainly hits home and certainly emphasizes that we must do something to halt the scourge of gun violence in our city. We grieve with all the families whose family members have been the victims of this potent evil."
