ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Community members were hoofing it Thursday reminding residents that Project TIPS was at Edgerton Park.

The organization "A Horse's Friend" was out to support the initiative Thursday afternoon.

Standing for "Trust, Information, Programs & Services," the main goal is to rebuild trust.

Community surveys were handed out by law enforcement and volunteers early in the event to have conversations about quality of life issues and area violence.

These groups then invited everyone to a cookout at Edgerton Park.

Organizer Gary Mervis says giving young residents an opportunity to become familiar with local officers is a vital part of the program.

"It's that the young children begin to see the police people when they're not doing their job," Mervis said. "The only time they might see them is when they're executing a warrant, making an arrest. Now they can get a chance to see them and play catch and talk to them and realize that they're good people too."
