SENECA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Due to opposition from local government and neighbors, a subsidiary of Progressive Waste Solutions has withdrawn its proposal to haul New York City's trash to the Seneca Meadows Landfill near Waterloo.

The contract between the city and the landfill would have run 20 years, and estimated to have been worth more than $3 billion, but residents rallied around concerns about some 36 rail cars of garbage per day arriving on train tracks.

The landfill pays millions in taxes each year and is one of Seneca County's biggest employers.
