BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- The Village of Brockport has been nestled next to the Erie Canal since 1829, but could its signs soon bear a different name?

"I personally think that the town of Brockport, they should just leave it alone," Nicholas Gillo, a life-long Brockport resident said.

"I think it would be kind of stupid to get rid of the whole town. We are a community," Cheyanna Miller, a 15-year-Brockport resident said.

A dissolution petition was delivered Monday to the village clerk. It calls for Brockport to dissolve into the Town of Sweden. Residents are citing the village's highest tax and water rates in Monroe County.

"I understand tax rates are high, which they are, but I don't think that is the answer at all," Miller said.

There were 429 signatures on the dissolution petition, which is a little more than 10 percent of the registered voters in the area. While that's all the law requires, many we spoke with said the small number of signatures shows how the majority already feels.

The group that filed the dissolution petition has decided to not speak to the media until the petition is certified.

Brockport's Mayor Margaret Blackman the village board is confident if there is a vote to dissolve the village, it won't pass.  Blackman said Brockport is in much better financial shape now, compared to 2010 when the fate of the village was in the hands of voters then.

Others aren't as confident as they ponder a future without the local law enforcement.

"I would mostly be concerned about the emergency services, like the fire department and the police department being farther away," Alyssa Button, a four-year Brockport resident said.

It will be at least 10 days before the petition is verified by the village clerk. While the fate of the petition is up in the air, residents are firm on their opinions.

"At the end of the day, I just think it would be more expensive to get rid of Brockport," Gillo said.

If the petition is certified, a vote could take place during the next village election on June 21.
